Gimlet

History-wise, the Gimlet is another drink full of limes made by British sailors to keep them from getting scurvy (see my Rickey post). Gimlet uses sweetness to make the booze smoother, a Rickey uses soda.
The name Gimlet may have come from Rear-Admiral Sir Thomas Desmond Gimlette (served 1879 – 1913), who was a doctor. He was probably the dude making the sailors drink their lime juice.
This drink uses Rose’s Lime Juice, which has an interesting history of its own. In 1867 a man named Lauchlan Rose patented a method to preserve citrus juice without alcohol. Ownership of Rose’s Sweetened Lime Juice (or Rose’s Lime Juice Cordial in the UK) has changed hands several times in the last 150 years, and it is now owned by Keurig Dr Pepper, which I didn’t know was a corporation. So much learning happening!
My Gimlet here is a Cucumber Gimlet, recommended by a friend as a refreshing summer drink. It is gin, lime juice, and simple syrup. I muddled cucumber with the simple syrup, which gives it a hint of cucumber flavor, and the pretty green color. It is delicious, and a nice drink after the Kamikaze mistake.
