Mint Julep

October 30, 2024

Bourbon, mint, sugar (simple syrup), bitters, lots of ice⁣

This recipe is available on liquor.com.

The Kentucky Derby – The Only Place Where People Party for 2 Weeks for a 2 Minute Race. Mint Juleps have been the official drink of the Kentucky Derby since 1938, with nearly 120,000 Juleps served over the race weekend at the Churchill Downs Racetrack each year. The drink itself has been around since the 1700s in the American South, as a “medicine” to settle the stomach. (So many boozy medicines in history!)⁣

I wanted to know more about the traditional silver or pewter cups, and how they came about. I wasn’t able to find a real origin. But I did learn this in and article in The Atlantic – “The purpose of the cups isn’t immediately clear to most drinkers because they are holding them wrong. Julep cups should only be held by the top or the bottom so that the crushed ice inside them can create a frost on the outside.” Got it, will do. Your hands freeze if you try to hold it any other way, really.⁣

It’s clear why this is a classic. The mint + sweetness + bitters blends beautifully with the bourbon. Finding new treasures like this drink is why I’m enjoying this project so much.⁣
