Cuban Rose

Rum, oj, grenadine
This recipe is available on thespruceeats.com.
The recipe for this drink was originally published in 1934 in The Old Waldorf-Astoria Bar Book, in the “Cuban Concoctions” section. That’s all of the history I know about this drink, but in researching, I learned a tidbit about Cuban drinks in general…Cuba was a hot spot not only for American tourists who wanted to drink during Prohibition, but also for American bartenders who wanted to work.
At first glance, you might think you’re looking at a Cosmopolitan – but the similarity ends there. While Cosmos are VERY sweet and VERY sour, this drink is more mellow and allows the nice taste of the rum to come through.
Because there is so much rum in a Cuban Rose and so little oj and grenadine, I was afraid this was going to go down roughly, like my experience with martinis. Nope. I haven’t had enough rum drinks to know if it’s just the rum that goes down easily, or if that little bit of oj is enough to smooth out the taste. I can tell you this – if I want to drink (or serve) pretty pink cocktails in pretty glasses, I’ll choose this over a Cosmo, any day.
