Mojito
October 30, 2024
White rum, sugar (simple syrup), lime juice, soda, mint
This recipe is available on liquor.com.
The Mojito has a long history. In the 1500s, Sir Francis Drake landed in Havana with a very sick crew, suffering from dysentery and scurvy. Very nice locals shared a medicine with him…it was made up of aguarediente de cana (Cuban booze at the time), mint leaves, and the juices from sugar cane and limes. And it worked! Of course, just like other drinks that became popular with men at sea, the citrus keeps scurvy at bay and the mint helped calm the stomach. Later, a cocktail named “El Draque” using very similar ingredients was known to be popular in Cuba, and supposedly named after Drake himself.
A very old drink, and so international! Mojitos were the most popular drink in Britain and France in 2016.
The rum, mint, and lime is a winning combination. I’m learning that most drinks with lime juice overdo it for me…this drink calls for 3/4 oz, I’m going to cut back on the lime in my next Mojito. And there will certainly be a “next one”.
Thank you @katherinemoorewriter for the mint from your garden while I wait for my plant to mature!
