Frozen Margarita

I added tequila to my bar! ⁣

This is another prohibition era drink, and the exact origins are lost, but we know this. Americans were flocking to Mexico for party weekends during prohibition (of course they were, I still say prohibition was such a STUPID idea, people still drank), and “margarita” means “daisy” in Spanish. There is a theory that the Margarita is a version of the Daisy cocktail, but with tequila instead of brandy. ⁣

As far as frozen margs go, we have Mariano Martinez to thank. He is a Mexican American inventor, entrepreneur, restaurateur, and creative artist. In Dallas, Texas in 1971, he adapted a soft serve ice cream machine to make margaritas and dubbed it “The World’s First Frozen Margarita Machine”. That machine is now in the collection of the National Museum of American History, part of the Smithsonian Institution. ⁣

I have it in my head that I don’t like tequila, aside from an occasional Margarita, so I thought I’d start off with a tequila drink I know I like. And wow – this is maybe the best marg I’ve ever had! All that work squeezing those tiny limes was worth it. And it’s hot in Austin today, so the frozen drink was a good choice. Margaritas are tequila, lime juice, triple sec, simple syrup, and ice.⁣
