Kamikaze

I just added vodka to my bar, and I randomly picked a vodka drink on my list to try first. What was I thinking? This isn’t a great drink – it’s too sweet, too sour, and I think it’s designed for people who don’t like alcohol but want to get drunk.
Heywood Gould, in his 1984 book Cocktail, writes about Kamikazes: “It’s a senseless, infuriating concoction made of equal parts vodka, lime juice, and triple sec…There are no standards for the kamikaze. It has no particular attributes that would distinguish a good kamikaze from a bad one, like a dry martini or a tart gimlet.” Hmm. I should have read this before I made the drink.
The Kamikaze shot first appeared in 1976 in New Jersey and may have been the original “shooter” cocktail. “Kamikaze” is a Japanese word literally meaning “divine wind”.
I promise to make better use of the vodka in the future.
The tippy little shot glass is something I got in Vancouver, BC in the 1990s. It has a rounded bottom and it always looks like it’s about to spill, but it just spins around and around, and not a drop spills out.
