Whiskey Sour

Recipe available on liquor.com.
What I’ve made here could be called a Boston Sour, because of the egg white (hence, the foam). Whiskey Sour is whiskey, lemon juice, simple syrup, and bitters – with the option of egg white.
The oldest historical mention of a whiskey sour was published in the Wisconsin newspaper, Waukesha Plain Dealer, in 1870 – but the drink itself is much older than that. Because professional sailors suffered from scurvy and other malnutrition and sea-sicknesses, ships began mixing a few ingredients together to serve to the crew. Sailors had a ration of various things, like limes and lemons to prevent scurvy, and liquor for something safe to drink. To prevent a ship full of intoxicated shipmates, the liquor was watered down and lemon or lime juice was added. Hence, we have a very early version of the Sour.
This is not what I would have expected a whiskey drink to taste like! It tastes like…hmmm…gummy candy! Boozy gummy candy. It’s so good!
